Oh my, how I wish I were there with you all! The photos are bringing back memories, both sweet and profound. Sage Chapel interior has turned out fabulously! And in the Moore Cottage “Pied Piper” shot, is that (forgot his name just now) the gentleman biographer who was there last year? Aren’t you fortunate! And Andrew too, lucky you.

Thank You Kevin…..I was blessed to be able to show my fiance and her family the campus toward the end of August as well. We experienced that profound silence in which God moves the heart of his faithful servants. Surely, Northfield and C.S. Lewis College are one of the Lord’s masterpieces in the making. How blessed are we to be the first of many to come….

I very much enjoy reading your journal entries, Maggie. Your words inspire one to think. I look forward to more.

It has never been easy to create a college. Particurlarly now, when most colleges are operating in the red and are dependent upon tuition dollars and government loans to pay the bills. It takes an enormous amount of money and faith in the merits of the educational philosophy. As a college advisor, I am always looking for colleges that encourage critical thinking and demonstrate integrity in their in deeds, not just words. There are too few “Great Books” colleges in the US. I aplaud a few on my website; I will do what I can to heighten awareness of C.L. Lewis College. I am pleased you are part of it.

My name is Matt Hopkins. My family and I just learned of your efforts and are really excited. While your website is quite nice, it has not nearly satisfied our hunger for information about the progress of the college. We are part of a three year old Classical Christian School in Mechanicville NY (2 hrs dead east on the banks of the next north/south river to the West) that is certain to graduate some students well prepared to attend CSLC. Is there a way to get into the information loop? We are big fans of the Conn River Valley and would be delighted to help out in any way we can during our school break.

Thank you, Margie, for sharing your deepest thoughts as you walk along the Northfield Campus, now the campus of C.S. Lewis. I am very familiar with and have loved that campus from my youth right up to my adult life through various youth conferences stretching back to the 1950’s. Through your writings I am am able to once again experience God’s presence around Perry Pond, the birthplace, Gould Hall, Russell Sage Chapel, the Auditorium, and other places mentioned in your blog. I even have fond memories of Moore Cottage where I was a guest as recent as 2005 when the campus was closing down. I fervently pray that you wll continue to journal your experiences in that wonderful place. I have also become a founder of the college and hope to visit again in the near future. Blessings…

Love the journal entries, and i love the beautiful campus that you are so blessed to be a part of. I write because i too am a resident of Northfield and enjoy the beauty of walking around the grounds of the future CS Lewis College. I am very envious of your opportunity to live/work on this sacred ground and am wondering a few things:
1) Do you know when the College is ‘open for business”?
2) Is the inn that you head a public or private inn?
3) Do you know where/who to talk to about finding employment within CS Lewis college? I am a recent college graduate with a double major in Environmental Science & Regional Planning with a minor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

I’m sure you’re getting this question by the thousands, but what does this mean for a potential student?
As I’m beginning to near graduation from High School, I’m wondering what this could mean for me.
Should I pack up my dream of going to the college and look somewhere else for an education? 🙁

  Thanks for your comment DearHeart. You definitely aren’t the first to ask the question. At this point, all I can say is that we have no specific projected date for the opening, as so much depends on our fundraising efforts and what happens with the Northfield Campus (and when the decision one way or another is made). If we raise enough money to be the recipient of the campus, we have an 18 month plan in place to start up the College (which would be an extremely fast start up). If the Green Family donates the campus to another organization, then we will need to search for another site before launching.

As a God-loving aluma of NMH, and having been inspired by C.S. Lewis’ great works and legacy, my heart goes out to the recent development of both the Northfield campus and the establishment of the C.S. Lewis College. There is no doubt that it is not only a great but necessary vision for our world now, to train tomorrow’s leaders with the right bearing, principles, wisdom, heart and mindset. The Northfield campus has a special anointing because of which it was founded upon, and its tranquil and awe-inspiring setting is a perfect training ground for those who seek to build an intimate relationship with Father God. I was not a believer when I was at NMH more than 20 years ago, but I am forever grateful for the seed that was planted in me while I was there. From where I can see it, and the vision that the Lord has shown me, there is always going to be resistence when we are advancing in the Kingdom of God. As Ephesians 6 stated, the battle that we are fighting is a spiritual battle and not of flesh and blood. For that reason, I pray for the Lord to help us all put on the full armor, and be able to stand firm. I pray for God to open doors that no man can close, and close ones that no man can open. I pray for the hearts of multitudes to be stirred, those whom God has placed this burden of the training of future godly Christian leaders, and for them to come forth with a financial commitment for the C.S. Lewis College. It is a 2-fish 5 -loaves scenario. It may be somethign small, but we sow in faith and for greater things to be done. I truly believe that our prayers of peace united in the body of Christ and asked in the name of Christ will be heard. Please let me know how else I can pray, specific requests etc.. I avail myself for prayers that are needed that will see the future of both the Northfield campus as well as the C.S. Lewis College materialised. In my heart I know that this is a partnership that is meant to be, and for that to happen we need to experience His supernatural and extraordinary grace. Not just theoretically understanding the awesome power of our saviour, but experiencing it in a radical way. All praise and glory to Christ our saviour. Amen.

When I first learned of a possibility of a Great Books College right here in New England, I was delighted.
But having been close to higher education and all its’ challenges I wondered how such a college could even open in this economy, much less succeed for the long term. I have been advocating the merits of a Great Books education for decades now. But with less than a handful of Great Books colleges in the country, public awarness and understanding of their value is regretfully, dismal.

I will continue to do what I can to spread the word as to WHY we need colleges like this to not only exist, but to thrive. Too many young people are not learning how to think much less think critically. The dumbing down of our educational system has stagnated the natural creative and productive energies of our populace. Though C.L Lewis college is founded on Christian principles, it does not mean that only Christians are welcome. I hope not, because I eschew pedagogical proselytizing.

I graduated from Northfield in 1969. I have often said that at it was there that my spirit was awakened. I have gone to meditate and pray many times on Round Top, where D. L. Moody and his wife were laid to rest. It is a very quiet hill top with a spectacular view, and it is a place where I feel safe. When we learned at our 35th reunion Reunion, that the campus would be sold, most of my classmates and I were devastated. It was a part of who we were; who we had become. We felt such a strong bond and now a sense of shame for our lack of responsible stewardship. Perhaps it was more of a sense of parenthood, as if we were the collective mother of the campus, having to give up our only child to a stranger. I prayed on that hillside, overlooking the Connecticut River Valley, for God to somehow change this destiny. I know he heard all of our prayers and lamentations. But the school continued to search for a buyer and after 5 years none was found. When we returned for our 40th Reunion in June of 2009, we learned that a sale was being negotiated. We would learn more by November.

As I walked the campus, I could see the strain that vacancy had had on the campus especially the very magnificent old buildings. So I walked to Round Top, to talk with DL and to listen for God’s word. I sat in the shade of large Maple tree and felt the cool breezes as I lay on the thick green grass, looking up toward heaven. Suddenly I felt comforted, as I has gained a new perspective. It was as if we, who so love the campus, stood before Solomon and willingly gave up our child, rather than lose her to being cut in half, and deteriorate in the void of human connection. I finally understood that the best scenario would be to have the campus cared for and used by others, for at least it would not die. But none of us was privy to the name of the prospective buyer, so I, and many others remained anxious and troubled. That is, until the news was released about the buyer and the plans for a The C. S. Lewis, Great Books College.

I cried with joy and shook my head in wonder. How much more perfect could a new owner be? A school to enrich the spirit and expand the mind! How much more closely could it suite D. L. Moody’s vision and ideology for the school which he would build on the land which he loved, and on which he was born and was buried. I was sure that throughout the past 150 years, God held in His hands the grounds on which the Northfield campus was built. I am certain that the C. S. Lewis College belongs at the beautiful and serene, Northfield Campus. I believe that God will once again protect both the campus and the college. I look forward to the day that I can, once again, sit in the Auditorium and be enlightened by the thoughts and words of a great Christian speaker and be inspired by the angelic voices and powerful lyrics of many young voices. I will do whatever God directs me to do to assist Him in his plan for the college and the campus. I sincerely believe that this union was divinely and harmoniously orchestrated and that our Miestro will conduct this symphony with finesse and grandeur. To God be the Glory for everything in this endeavor. We should all continue to pray, but we must remember to pray………..believing. Believing it will happen, in His time and in His way.

It is my current desire at the University of Texas at Dallas to study the works of C.S. Lewis extensively, and establish a chair also. I hope this college opens up! Lets start small and just let this college grow over time!! Every great school of this kind started small…..so should we. What is important is that we begin the school and let it develop and gradually we add more kids every year until a time we can afford a campus like Northfield Mount Hermon!!

As a headmaster of a classical christian school, few visions are more important to us than that which you have for CS Lewis College. Part of our mission is to graduate students who are prepared to live in the world around them; that they be literate, articulate, and well discipled. In short that they be mature, prepared for their role as faithful, Christ honoring adults in the world around them. There are very few colleges out there in a position to educate such a student. Most are geared entirely towards half-heated vocational training and have lost their vision of education which ironically is true vocational training.
Soldier on and may God grant you every blessing in this effort.

I pray that God will make clear the way (and ample the means) to enable the C.S. Lewis College to stay on the Northfield campus! The Green family and Hobby Lobby have been so generous, yet must know that more time and funding are needed. I have no doubt whatsoever about the dedication and commitment of the good folk of the C.S. Lewis Foundation, who have worked so very hard to see the College dream reach fruition. I know there is a benefactor out there somewhere who could help bless their efforts with success, and I hope he or she steps forward very soon!

The C. S. Lewis College has not opened up yet and I already want to attend. There are probably many others who feel the same way. However, with a limited enrollment of only 400 students–not everyone would be able to attend. Perhaps some sort of distance learning (simulcasts into churches or webcasts) should be incorporated into the future plans. This way, any member of the entire community (on the campus in New England or anywhere in the world) could be a current student– enjoying the timeless wisdom and childlike imagination of the humble genius known as C. S. Lewis.

I’ve been praying for the college. I attended one of the Oxford conferences in the 1990s, which was a great experience. I’d love to see the college flourish here in Western Mass. I have often wondered whether the foundation considered education/learning as a content area. It would be very compatible with the mission, since it would prepare experts to share their knowledge through design of instruction.

We continue to pray and believe that C.S. Lewis College will founded as a college offering a premiere education in liberal arts — in Northfield and in other locations as God directs and provides. Dr. Stan Mattson and his colleagues have established a great plan for the College that is clearly the “highest and best” use for the site. In the spirit of John 14, we believe!

You should consider the Madison Barracks at Sackets Harbor, NY, on the beautiful Lake Ontario. It’s historic (War of 1812), classical feel, and many of the Army’s old buildings are for sale. The community is quiet, small, and conducive for contemplative reflection on the Great Books. Cost of living and realty is very low. As a headmaster of a classical christian school within striking distance of the Northfield campus and a parent of 8 (soon to be 9) classically educated children we are delighted to hear that the vision remains and that the possibility of CSLewis College being housed in Norhtfield has been rekindled. That loud “hurrah” that you heard on the west coast when the news broke was a cheer that went up from the older students at my house. Our prayers are with you that God would be glorified through a great work done in Norhtfield.

I was a student at NMH for 2 years, lived on Northfield and have the fondest memories. The atmosphere there is so spiritual and conducive for bringing out the best qualities in man. Best of luck to C.S. Lewis college, I would be thrilled if you end up at Northfield after all.

I will be graduating this year as a high school senior and I think my biggest disappointment is that C.S Lewis College is not already open for admission. I strongly believe that a great books education will strengthen my connection to God and understanding of my faith. That being said, St. John’s College is looking pretty good for me right now, but i still wish an openly Christian Great Books College was around for students like me. Maybe someday i’ll be able to take a couple classes at CSLC after i have my undergrad. I really love everything i have read on the website so far! Keep up the awesome work!

Hi Dillon,

As a college counselor, I too was looking forward to seeing a “Great Books” College in the Northeast.
At the same time, even if the funding did come, I questioned it surviving with enough students
in the long term given the ‘dumbing’ down of our society. A society in which students have not been encouraged to read good books or write in complete sentences, not to mention how to think critically.

But your interest gives me hope. I hope to be proven wrong.
In any case you cannot go wrong with either of the St John’s campus’s.
Remember also the fact that you can enrich that experience by taking classes at both campuses during your enrollment at one.

I spent many years 6 to be exact attending the Christian Endeavor Conferences there and accepted Christ at Sage Chapel on June 24,1954.The fondest memories of my youth happened there. My life was transformed because of all of the wonderful people who shared their faith and the love of God in Christ with us. So glad to know there is some hope for this property. My husband and I visited the campus about 20 yrs. ago and recalled stopping there on our honeymoon in 1961. I will be anxious to know more about the development as it occurs and will share this web site with others. Blessings. Gayle

I have just learned of this situation and know that God has the perfect solution for this problem. I am always interested in why there is no consideration in changing the original use of a building or institution. All over our country we have special needs children who do not receive the proper education due to lack of funds, or lack of education of the teachers. I believe most teachers try very hard, but how can they give a special needs child what they need when they have 20 other children to educate. We are failing these children. Even with the IDEA act and the FAPE act, we are still falling short. I volunteer at school and church and see this first hand. Wouldn’t God want us to care for those most fragile and needy among us? My spirit is grieved, as I know our Fathers is also grieved. Please consider this appeal from my heart. In Christ, Joyce Johnson

The Lewis college seems like the most wonderful idea to me. I’m definitely praying for it! And I don’t know if it’ll be for undergrads or grads but I’m starting college next year and my dreams about this place are growing fast!
